Reviewing the Status of Religious Freedom in Iraq: Identifying Steps to Take

As part of an open session to discuss and review the situation of religious freedom in Iraq, the session was held at the Erbil International Hotel. Through that, steps to be taken were identified and ways to support the advancement of religious freedom were discussed in the light of current international reports.

Emphasis was placed on encouraging more NGOs and community-based organizations to contribute to the field of religious freedom and drawing on the 2021 International Reports on Religious Freedom in order to identify concrete steps that should be taken to secure this fundamental right for all Iraqis.

The Religious Freedom and Anti-Discrimination Roundtable in Iraq (IRFAR) in Iraq, in cooperation with the RFI (Religious Freedom Institution- Washington, D.C.), held the workshop titled:

  Promoting religious freedom in Iraq: opportunities and challenges

At the very beginning, Mr. Salah Ali (the General Coordinator) started with A brief about Iraq religious freedom and anti-discrimination Roundtable and Its future vision on promoting religious freedom in Iraq. Then the participants started in identifying obstacles and highlighting opportunities to promote religious freedom in the socio-political dynamics levels.

 After that, Mr. Jeremy Barker / Director, Middle East, RFI) explained the connection between religious freedom and social flourishing through principles, practices, and frameworks.

 Then, Mr. David K. Trimble /Vice President for Public Policy and Director, Center for Religious Freedom Education, RFI/ illustrated the interconnection among Education, Policy, and Law within the Strategic Advocacy and Core Principles.

 At the end, questions and open discussion were available for participants.

 The participants were effective with data and solutions and enriched the workshop with various constructive opinions and ideas in order to build an Iraqi society free of intolerance with the insisting on religious freedom towards the various components of Iraqi society.

 IRFAR gives thanks for all participants who participated and enriched this important workshop.


Bashiqa, the City of Brotherhood and Coexistence:

(To revive the spirit of coexistence and peace from the memory of previous generations)

With the support of the Religious Freedom Institute (RFI) and with the cooperation of the Education Directorate of Bashiqa: Ghasin Al-Zaiton Organization for Youth and IRAQ RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND ANTI-DISCRIMINATION ROUNDTABLE (IRFAR) held a celebration event of the 100th anniversary of the founding Bashiqa Primary School for Boys. The ceremony included an exhibition of photo gallery and a documentary film on the history of the school and speeches by society leaders. Also, there was a panel discussion for society leaders and religious men who graduated from this school to talk about the role of education in supporting brotherhood, coexistence and peace in Bashiqa City.

Religious Freedom and Anti-Discrimination Roundtable in Iraq in Partnership with Religious Freedom Institute, the Salam Al Rafidain Organization / Center of Art and Peace, Madarat Hall for Culture and Arts cordially have held the art exhibition on promoting a culture of diversity and religious pluralism and anti-discrimination in Iraq. The exhibition included also an open panel discussion on these topics.

The announcement of the three paintings winners was declared, and the certificates were distributed to the participants.

The Director General of the Parliamentary Development Institute meets with the General Coordinator of the IRFAR:

Mr. Saad Fayyad, General Director of the Parliamentary Development Institute in the Iraqi Parliament, met with Mr. Salah Ali, the General Coordinator of the IRAQ RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND ANTI-DISCRIMINATION ROUNDTABLE (IRFAR) on Wednesday 1/9/2021

During the meeting, which was held at the Institute's headquarters, the General Director of the Institute emphasized on the importance of cooperation in implementing projects that contribute to promoting peaceful coexistence in Iraqi society.

Mr. Fayyad assured on the importance of societal integration and peaceful coexistence in strengthening ties between religions and nationalities, especially since Iraq represents a diverse community and a connection point for civilizations and religious diversity.

Mr. Fayyad suggested presenting a proposal for cooperation between the two parties along with the three authorities by forming a department for legislation and measuring the impact of the legislation.

For his part, the General Coordinator of the IRFAR, Mr. Salah Ali, showed their willingness to provide training in the field of community education regarding religious freedom and how to support programs, human resources and capacity building of government departments
